Ear Surgery in Alpharetta, GA

Ear surgery, also known as otoplasty, is a surgery that alters the size, position or proportion of the patient’s ears. It is typically used to correct the deformities of the ear or the appearance of protruding ears.

Ear Surgery Consultation
At The Graivier Center, we value our personal relationships with our patients. Each patient is treated as an individual, and as such, is given a personal consultation prior to any treatment. Dr. Graivier and his staff will meet with you to help you make decisions regarding which procedure(s) or treatment(s) will result in achieving your aesthetic goals. The consultation will conclude with a discussion about the desired treatment, your expectations, the benefits and risks associated with the treatment and post-treatment recovery.

Ear Surgery Complementary Procedures
It is a common practice for patients undergoing ear surgery to combine several procedures at once that will offer complementary or enhanced results. At The Graivier Center, we will take the time to walk potential patients through all of the risks and benefits of each surgery, whether you choose a single treatment or multiple treatments.

Patients undergoing ear surgery can elect to combine the following procedures for enhanced results:

  • Nose surgery
  • Chin augmentation
  • Facial fat grafting

Ear Surgery

Otoplasty can be done at any age after the ears have reached their full size, usually after age five, through adulthood.

If you have a child who you would like to consider ear surgery for, consider the following:

  • Child should be healthy, without a life-threatening illness or untreated chronic ear infections
  • Child should be five years of age or older, which is when a child’s ear cartilage is stable enough for correction
  • Child should be cooperative and follow instructions well
  • Child should be able to communicate his or her feelings

Optimal ages to consider for surgery include before 1st grade, before high school, before college or anytime in adulthood.

The Graivier Center will perform otoplasty to achieve a natural-looking ear contour that is anatomically balanced. In addition to treating protruding ears and ear deformities, Dr. Graivier can also evaluate and correct the outcome of a prior ear surgery that did not provide adequate results.

For this minimally invasive surgery, Dr. Graivier will make small, inconspicuous incisions behind the patient’s ears and in the natural folds of the skin. He will use these incisions to access the cartilage of the ear, which is its support structure.

Through this unique view, Dr. Graivier will be able to shape and mold the cartilage into the desired, normalized shape. When he has sufficiently molded the ears, he will close the incisions with sutures and apply a bandage that will hold the ears close to the head.

If patient’s ears stick out, ear pinning can be performed to flatten the ears against the head. If one ear is positioned higher than the other, ear repositioning can create symmetry.

Ear Surgery Recovery
Cosmetic ear surgery is usually an outpatient procedure. A compression head wrap will be worn for about four days. After that, a sweat band should be worn at night for four weeks to keep from rolling the ears forward.

Patients should expect several days for recovery time. For children, the parent should plan on a full week off from school.

After several weeks, the patient will be fully recovered and able to resume normal exercise routines.

You will be given specific instructions from The Graivier Center that may include:

  • How to care for the surgical site and drains, if applicable
  • Medications to apply or take orally to aid in healing and the progression of your recovery
  • Specific concerns to look for at the surgical site or in your general health
  • Post-op follow-up appointment information
